Le Green Lantern de l'âge d'argent a été créé par John Broome et Gil Kane dans Showcase #22 (Octobre 1959). Le volume 2 de Green Lantern a commencé à paraître en août 1960. La série a mis en lumière Hal Jordan et a introduit la mythologie expansive entourant les ancêtres de Hal dans le Green Lantern Corps.
Le super vilain Sinestro a été introduit au #7 (juillet-août 1961). L'amour de Hal Jordan, Carol Ferris, est devenue Star Sapphire dans le numéro 16. Black Hand, un personnage en vedette dans le scénario de « Blackest Night » en 2009-2010, a fait ses débuts dans le numéro 29 (juin 1964). Remplaçant de Green Lantern, Guy Gardner est apparu pour la première fois dans l'histoire « Earth's Other Green Lantern! » dans le numéro 59 (mars 1968).
